Tripura: Biplab Kumar Deb Seeks Expedited Border Fencing, BSF Augmentation

Agartala: Former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to expedite border fencing and augment Border Security Forces (BSF) in the state to curb infiltration.

Tripura shares an 856-km-long international boundary with Bangladesh, with only 26.64 km remaining unfenced.

Although most of the border has been fenced, the remaining portion’s construction is progressing slowly. Deb highlighted that land acquisition issues are not hindering the process. However, the existing old border fencing is in disrepair, requiring renovation.

Given Bangladesh’s current disturbed law and order situation, Deb warned that vested interests might exploit the porous border. He emphasized the need for swift completion of fencing and renovation of old borders to prevent potential security breaches.

While acknowledging the Central Government’s proactive measures in preventing infiltration, Deb stressed that enhancing BSF strength is crucial for better border security. This would mitigate potential adverse impacts of Bangladesh’s situation on Tripura.

The BSF has taken significant strides in fortifying Tripura’s borders, covering six out of eleven unfenced patches with single-row fencing. Additionally, AI-enabled cameras and facial recognition tools have been deployed to curb illegal infiltration and contraband smuggling.
