Tripura Charts Ambitious Course to Become ‘Future-Ready’ State
Agartala: Tripura is actively laying the groundwork to transform into a “future-ready” state, a vision articulated by Chief Minister Manik Saha during the 10th NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting in New Delhi. The state has meticulously crafted a strategic roadmap designed to significantly boost per capita income and sustain a robust economic growth rate over the next two decades, with an eye on 2047.
The Chief Minister elaborated on a comprehensive planning exercise undertaken over the past year. This included extensive consultations with a diverse range of stakeholders, from the Ministry of DONER and various academic institutions to industry leaders and government officials. This collaborative effort has been instrumental in identifying key enablers crucial for the state’s developmental trajectory.
Saha highlighted nine pivotal enablers anticipated to drive a consistent annual growth rate of 12 per cent for the next two decades. He underscored Tripura’s inherent strengths, including its strong agricultural base, high literacy rates, abundant tourism assets, rich natural resources, a thriving forest-based economy, continuously improving infrastructure, and its unique position as an energy-surplus state.
The state’s audacious goal is to elevate its per capita income from the current USD 2,300 to a remarkable USD 23,000 by 2047. This ambitious target will be achieved by strategically focusing on high-growth sectors such as medical wellness, eco-tourism, information technology, the knowledge economy, resilient agriculture, cultural heritage, and sports.
Further bolstering its economic prowess, the Chief Minister informed the council about the state government’s ongoing efforts in developing 20 industrial estates. He also pointed out the Tripura Industrial Investment Policy 2024, designed to actively promote both manufacturing and services sectors. The state has diligently implemented all 387 business reforms mandated under the Business Reforms Action Plan 2024, signaling a strong commitment to ease of doing business.
Tripura is already witnessing substantial investments across a multitude of sectors, including rubber, bamboo processing, healthcare, education, data centres, hospitality, and general business and commerce. This influx of capital underscores growing confidence in the state’s economic potential.
Highlighting the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit within the state, Saha revealed that the number of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) has impressively reached 86,117. He also proudly stated the robust base of 60,318 Self-Help Groups, encompassing 5,49,559 members, and the significant achievement of 94,723 ‘Lakhpati Didis’, reflecting grassroots economic empowerment.
In a strong commitment to sustainable development, the Chief Minister affirmed Tripura’s comprehensive strategy for harnessing the potential of green energy. The state has set an ambitious target of achieving 90 per cent renewable energy by 2047. Saha explained that their approach prioritises the promotion of solar energy projects through streamlined land allotment processes, viability gap funding, and an increased adoption of rooftop solar installations across residential, government, and commercial sectors.
