Tripura CM Directs Officials to Expedite Flood Damage Assessment Report Amidst Ongoing Relief Efforts

Northeast Desk, 12th September: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has instructed officials to accelerate the preparation of a comprehensive damage assessment report from the recent floods that ravaged the state between August 19 and 23. The report is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs by the end of the week.

The devastating floods claimed 36 lives and affected approximately 14 lakh people, with widespread destruction to infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods. During a review meeting with top officials, Saha emphasized the urgency of finalizing and submitting the damage assessment report to facilitate timely assistance from the Centre.

Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey assured that ex gratia payments and compensation for damaged houses are being prioritized, with 26 families already receiving aid. Additionally, 3,873 flood-hit individuals are currently residing in 67 relief camps, receiving essential services.

Despite concerns raised by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar about fund shortages, Pandey confirmed that there are no financial constraints hindering restoration work or assistance to affected families. The state government has announced a special package of Rs 564 crore for infrastructure restoration and flood relief.

Sarkar, however, urged the chief minister to press the Centre for immediate financial assistance, suggesting a delegation to meet with top Union ministers if necessary.
