Tripura CM Manik Saha Accuses Previous Governments of Neglecting Cultural Heritage, Urges Revival of Kirtan Traditions

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha launched a pointed critique against former CPI(M) and Congress administrations, accusing them of neglecting Tripura’s cultural heritage and spiritual traditions.

Speaking at a Kirtan artists’ conference held at Mukta Dhara Auditorium, CM Saha emphasized the need to preserve the region’s devotional music and heritage, which he sees as integral to Tripura’s cultural identity.

Addressing the Tarak Brahma Kirtaniya Shilpi Samiti gathering, Saha highlighted the spiritual and cultural importance of Kirtan, a traditional form of devotional singing, as a key element in the lives of Tripura’s people. “The word Kirtan has roots in Sanskrit, and it remains significant throughout one’s life—from birth to death,” Saha said, underscoring the role of Kirtan in fostering a spiritual atmosphere that “allows people to transcend sorrows and pleasures alike.” He urged both the public and artists to safeguard these traditions, asserting that the responsibility for cultural preservation rests with society at large.

In a sharp critique of the opposition’s legacy, Saha accused past CPI(M) governments of promoting a secular ethos that, in his view, undermined Tripura’s cultural and religious values. “For 35 years, we saw a rule that pushed aside our culture and faith. Those in power did not believe in God, nor did they let others freely practice their beliefs,” he claimed. He further criticized Congress for what he described as a “mixed policy” that diluted local traditions by incorporating foreign ideologies.

Highlighting the current administration’s efforts, Saha noted an increase in religious freedom and support for cultural expressions like Kirtan. He urged Kirtan artists to use their influence responsibly, positioning them as agents of social change. “As artists, you play a vital role in society,” he said, encouraging them to uphold and promote the state’s cultural values.

Saha’s remarks underscore his government’s commitment to restoring Tripura’s cultural identity while drawing a sharp contrast with past leadership, reinforcing the cultural and religious freedoms his administration advocates.
