Tripura CM Manik Saha Stresses Legal Education Reform at National Law University Ceremony
Agartala – Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha reaffirmed the state’s commitment to strengthening legal education while attending the National Law University (NLU) building ceremony in Agartala. He emphasized the crucial role of a robust legal system in upholding democracy and ensuring justice.
Reflecting on the foundation stone laying by President Droupadi Murmu in 2022, Saha described the event as a historic milestone in Tripura’s legal education journey. He expressed optimism about the institution’s potential in producing skilled legal professionals, judges, and policymakers.
Saha urged that NLU should not be confined to traditional legal studies but must evolve into a research-driven institution. “We should not limit ourselves to just one law university; research must be conducted to elevate the university’s standards and raise public awareness about its significance,” he stated.
The chief minister assured that the state government would continue to support NLU with land, logistics, and financial aid, emphasizing that a strong legal system is integral to democracy. He highlighted that legal education should extend beyond textbooks and incorporate justice, ethics, and governance.
Saha further called for interdisciplinary learning, integrating law with technology, governance, and business studies. He urged NLU to seek national and international collaborations, ensuring that students engage with leading legal scholars worldwide.
The event was attended by Tripura High Court Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, along with Justices Amarnath Goud, Arindam Lodh, SD Purkayastha, and Biswajit Palit. Also present were Secretaries Kiran Gitte and Raval Hemandra Kumar, and NLU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Yogesh Pratap Singh.
In a notable announcement, Justice Arindam Lodh revealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NLU Tripura and the judiciary to establish the Apanshu Mohan Lodh Memorial Lecture Series, honoring his late father, an eminent lawyer. An endowment fund of ₹8 lakh has been allocated for the initiative, which aims to enrich legal discourse at the university.
With NLU Tripura poised for growth, Saha’s vision for a progressive, research-oriented, and globally connected institution underscores the state’s dedication to legal excellence and governance reform.
