Tripura Congress Sounds Alarm on Worsening Law and Order

Agartala: The air in Tripura is thick with accusations as the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president, Asish Kumar Saha, on Monday minced no words in slamming the alleged collapse of law and order across the state. Leading a delegation to meet Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, Saha issued a stark warning, demanding immediate and decisive intervention from the state’s law enforcement machinery.

Following his meeting with the DGP, Saha addressed reporters, painting a grim picture of escalating violence, particularly targeting opposition leaders. He squarely placed the blame on “miscreants, supported by the ruling party,” for what he described as a relentless campaign of attacks. The Congress, he asserted, would be left with no option but to launch a statewide movement if the police continued to turn a blind eye to these acts.

Adding a chilling dimension to his allegations, Saha claimed that many of these incidents unfolded in broad daylight, with police personnel present but seemingly unwilling to act. “Even these attacks are happening in broad daylight, right in front of the police. However, the police are not intervening in any way and are acting as silent spectators,” he stated, a clear indictment of police inaction. He further detailed a litany of grievances, including the vandalism of political offices, destruction of vehicles, and disruption of public meetings, all occurring with disturbing regularity. “Law and order have deteriorated across the entire state,” Saha declared, attributing this decline to the ruling party’s alleged loss of public trust, leading them to resort to “terrorism.”

The TPCC chief also brought a recent, grave incident to the DGP’s attention – the alleged premeditated murder of Asish Das in Surma, Dhalai District. The victim’s family, Saha noted, has directly implicated local leaders associated with the ruling party in the crime. He urged the authorities to treat this matter with the utmost urgency, demanding the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an IPS officer to ensure a thorough and impartial probe. Saha emphasised that Monday’s discussions with the DGP largely revolved around the perceived inaction of the police force and the pressing need for accountability. The Congress, he warned, is prepared to escalate the matter significantly if concrete steps are not discernible in the days to come.
