Tripura Congress to Embark on Long March to International Border Over Embankment Concerns

Agartala: The Congress party in Tripura has announced plans to organise a long march to the international border in Unakoti district, demanding the repair of an existing embankment or the construction of a new one to protect Kailashahar town.

This move comes after Bangladesh began building an embankment on its side near Tripura’s Rangauti area, sparking concerns among locals.

MLA Birajit Sinha drew attention to the issue during the winter session of the Assembly, expressing concerns about the state government’s inaction. “People of Kailashahar are worried about the state government’s dilly-dally attitude over Bangladesh’s move to construct a high-rise embankment. If this is done, several areas of Kailashahar town will submerge during monsoon,” Sinha said.

The Unakoti district Congress committee has decided to take matters into its own hands, organising a ‘border abhijyan’ (long march to border) on January 25.

The march aims to demand immediate repair or construction of an embankment in Kailasahar, with thousands of people expected to join.

Sinha emphasized that the people want the state government and the Centre to take immediate steps to address the issue.

Chief Minister Manik Saha recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, handing over a ‘ground report’ with satellite images on Bangladesh’s move.

Unakoti District Magistrate D K Chakma noted that the construction of the embankment in Bangladesh will create problems in passing floodwater to downstream areas.
