Tripura: Efforts Underway to Inaugurate Sabroom Land Port by February, Providing Direct Access to Bangladesh’s Ramgarh Port

Northeast Desk, 25th January: The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) is actively working to inaugurate its facility in Sabroom, South Tripura, by February. This strategic move is expected to grant direct access to Bangladesh’s Ramgarh port, which is currently undergoing construction.

In an effort to expedite the construction progress, LPAI Chairman Aditya Mishra visited the Sabroom land port site on Tuesday, diligently reviewing the ongoing work. As of now, approximately 95% of the cargo terminal at the Sabroom facility has been successfully completed, with 80% of the passenger terminal also making substantial progress.

During the visit, Chairman Aditya Mishra underscored the significance of completing the proposed land port at Sabroom promptly. He engaged in discussions with a Bangladesh delegation led by Project Director Ramgarh Port, Sarwar Alam, further emphasizing the collaborative efforts between both sides.

Debasish Nandi, the Land Ports Authority of India’s Agartala manager, shared insights into the plans, stating, “We aim to commence passenger movement through Sabroom land port by February, considering that progress on cargo handling facilities has not advanced significantly on the Bangladesh side. Our unwavering commitment is geared towards opening passenger movement from Sabroom land port next month.”

Nandi acknowledged that while the Matri Setu, connecting both sides across the international border, was inaugurated in 2021, cargo movement might take additional time due to pending facility developments in Bangladesh’s Ramgarh.

The ambitious project for the Sabroom land port, capable of handling both cargo and passengers, has been allocated a substantial amount of Rs 232 crore for its construction. The completion of this initiative is poised to enhance connectivity and trade relations between the two nations.
