Tripura Faces Heatwave Threat: Meteorological Department Issues Yellow Warning
Agartala; The Meteorological Department of Agartala has issued a yellow warning for Tripura, cautioning residents about the ongoing hot and humid weather expected to persist for the next three days. The warning comes as temperatures are forecasted to soar, posing potential health risks.
According to the department, partly cloudy sky conditions combined with intense solar radiation and the inflow of hot westerly winds are driving temperatures above normal levels. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach 36 degrees Celsius or higher in some districts of Tripura, with a likely deviation of 3 to 4°C above the seasonal average. Additionally, increasing atmospheric moisture will further heighten humidity levels across the region.
Health authorities have expressed concerns that the hot and humid conditions could lead to severe health issues, including heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and the aggravation of pre-existing conditions such as asthma, heart disease, and kidney problems.
In response to the heatwave threat, the department has issued a set of precautionary guidelines for public safety. Residents are advised to avoid going outdoors between 12 noon and 3 pm, stay hydrated by drinking water regularly—even when not feeling thirsty—and wear light, breathable cotton clothing.
Travelers and outdoor workers are urged to carry water, wear hats or use umbrellas, and apply damp cloths on their head, neck, face, and limbs to cool down. The public is also reminded not to leave children or pets inside parked vehicles and to seek immediate medical attention if experiencing dizziness or illness.
The department further recommended using oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and homemade drinks like lassi, rice water (torani), lemon water, and buttermilk to maintain hydration. Residents are encouraged to keep their homes cool by using curtains or sunshades during the day and opening windows at night for ventilation. Pets and livestock should be kept in shaded areas with access to sufficient water.
The advisory remains in effect for the next three days as officials monitor weather patterns closely, urging the public to take necessary precautions to safeguard their health and well-being.
