Tripura Floods Inflict Over Rs 600 Crores in Losses to Agriculture and Power Sectors

Agartala, August 24 — The recent floods in Tripura have caused significant devastation, leading to losses exceeding Rs 600 crores in both the Agriculture and Power sectors.

In the Agriculture sector, the floods have severely impacted 68,826 hectares of land, resulting in a production loss of 2.43 lakh metric tons. The estimated damage to agriculture is Rs 532.25 crores, with the potential for further increases. The floods have affected 1,41,406 farmers, with substantial damage to various crops. Specifically, 4,000 hectares of jhum land, 7,000 hectares of Ayush paddy, and 1.5 lakh hectares of Aman paddy have been submerged. Additionally, the horticulture sector has suffered damage to 5,614 hectares, with a production loss of 30.497 lakh and a monetary loss of Rs 167 crores impacting 27,000 farmers.

The Power sector has also faced considerable challenges. Out of 9,90,451 consumers, 3,19,773 have been affected, with 1,49,000 still experiencing disruptions. Infrastructure damage includes 1,603 broken poles, 501 damaged transformers, 642 km of wiring down, and several substations and power lines submerged or broken. The estimated loss for the Power sector is Rs 9.02 crores, with further increases expected. Restoration efforts are ongoing, with 111 teams working statewide. However, severe waterlogging in Gomati and South Districts is hampering progress.

Power and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the extensive impacts of the floods and emphasized the ongoing efforts to mitigate damage and restore essential services.
