Tripura: Following the Attack on Cong Leader, EC Takes Action Against officials
Guwahati: The Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered the suspension of the Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of the region on Friday, a day following the assault on Congress politician Ajay Kumar during a public gathering in the West Tripura district.
According to the officials, the ECI has ordered Tripura’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) to suspend and dismiss the SDPO without delay.
The officer in command of the Jirania district in West Tripura as well as the officer in charge of the Ranibazaar Police Station have both been ordered to be suspended and removed by the ECI.
The West Tripura District’s Jirania Sub Division incident of alleged political violence was reported on January 18. The ECI earlier on Thursday ordered an investigation into the incident.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura was instructed by the ECI to request a report from the DGP through the state’s Chief Secretary and submit it by Friday at 3 o’clock.
The alleged assault on the Congress leader allegedly took place 30 minutes after the ECI on Wednesday declared the dates for the Assembly elections in the three states in the Northeast.
The Election Commission released the timetable for the Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland Assembly elections on Wednesday. These polls will take place in February and March of this year. On March 2, 2023, the outcomes for all three states will be announced.
