Tripura: Four Arrested Following Death of Young Boy; Sparking Protests in Dhalai District

Northeast Desk, 13th July: Four individuals have been arrested following the death of a young boy, Parameswar Reang, who succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at GB Pant Hospital in Agartala. Reang’s death has ignited widespread protests in the Ganda Twisa sub-division of Tripura’s Dhalai District.

The incident traces back to July 7, when a minor altercation between two groups at a local fair escalated into a violent scuffle, resulting in injuries to Reang. He passed away on Friday morning, prompting an immediate public outcry.

Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Waheed confirmed the arrests, stating, “We have already arrested four boys, all of whom are now in judicial custody.” The situation intensified as Reang’s body was brought back to Gandacherra, leading to heightened tensions and demands from villagers for the arrest of those responsible for the violence against Reang.

Protesters set fire to several small establishments, causing significant damage. “We have deployed police and paramilitary forces everywhere. We are taking control of the situation and do not want it to escalate. The situation is now totally under control,” Waheed assured.

To maintain law and order, the district administration has deployed sufficient forces on the ground and imposed Section 144 in the Gonda Twisa sub-division, prohibiting the assembly of more than four people. The internet connection in Gandacherra has been suspended for 24 hours to curb the spread of inflammatory messages on social media, which authorities believe exacerbated the unrest.

“We sensed that the law and order situation might deteriorate, so we declared Section 144. Although some protests occurred at night, everything is now normal,” Waheed added.

The situation is being closely monitored to ensure peace and stability in the region. Further updates will be provided as the investigation and legal proceedings progress.
