Tripura GMP to Push Governor for Action on Rural Jobs and Tribal Council Corruption
Agartala: The Tripura Ganamukti Parisad (GMP), the tribal wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has announced its plan to submit a deputation to Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on January 11, raising critical issues affecting tribal communities.
The delegation will focus on declining job opportunities under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and allegations of corruption within the Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
Speaking at a press conference, GMP General Secretary Radhacharan Debbarma revealed that the decision to stage the protest was made during the Adivasi Adhikari Rastriya Manch conference in Delhi on December 1. He called on the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre to expedite the passage of the Constitution (125th Amendment) Bill, 2019, which has been pending for several years.
The bill, he stated, is essential to granting greater financial and administrative autonomy to the Sixth Schedule areas in the northeastern region, impacting over one crore tribal people in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram.
Debbarma also accused the Tipra Motha-led administration of mismanaging funds allocated to TTAADC in the absence of elected village committees. Highlighting the lack of elections since 2021, he alleged that leaders from Tipra Motha were siphoning off development funds and called for immediate elections to restore accountability. With TTAADC overseeing 587 village committees, he described the current situation as detrimental to tribal governance and community welfare.
The GMP leader further criticized the BJP government over the sharp decline in MGNREGA man-days, which he said had left rural families struggling for income. Citing state records, Debbarma pointed out that only 42 man-days of work have been generated in the current financial year, with three months remaining. He labeled the low figures as evidence of the administration’s failure to provide adequate employment opportunities for the rural poor.
The GMP has planned an agitation program on January 11 to demand urgent intervention on these issues. A memorandum detailing their concerns will be submitted to the governor, urging his support to address the grievances and ensure immediate action. The party expressed hope that these steps would lead to accountability and reforms in governance for the tribal communities of Tripura.
