Tripura Government Aims for Zero Road Traffic Accidents with Comprehensive Measures

Agartala: The Tripura government has announced an ambitious plan to bring road traffic accidents down to zero, addressing the state’s annual toll of approximately 750 accidents and 250 fatalities.

Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, speaking at the 15th meeting of the State Road Safety Council on December 23, emphasized the administration’s commitment to this goal through a series of targeted measures.

Highlighting the severity of the issue, Chowdhury noted that public awareness plays a crucial role in preventing accidents and saving lives. “Road accidents and loss of life can be avoided by adopting caution and public awareness,” he said, adding that both Central and state governments have undertaken various initiatives to address road safety concerns.

The use of advanced equipment, such as interceptor vehicles, has been prioritized to ensure better traffic control and enforcement.

To encourage swift assistance for accident victims, the state has introduced a ₹5,000 Good Samaritan award for individuals who step forward to provide timely help.

The government is also rolling out public awareness programs in 25 colleges across Tripura, focusing on road safety, consumer rights, and the dangers of drug abuse. These initiatives will be coordinated among the departments of Transport, Food, and Home Affairs.

Chowdhury pointed out that the Supreme Court Road Safety Committee mandates a 10% annual reduction in road accident fatalities. Tripura has exceeded this target, achieving a 13% decrease in fatalities in 2024 compared to the previous year. This progress reflects the impact of the state’s efforts under the directive.

Additional measures include bi-monthly meetings of District Road Safety Committees to monitor and strategize accident prevention and the establishment of a dedicated Road Safety Wing to implement policies effectively. The minister reiterated the government’s resolve to sustain and expand these efforts, ensuring safer roads for all citizens.
