Tripura Government Imposes Section 144 in Jirania Sub-Division Following Communal Violence
Northeast Desk, 26th August: The Tripura Government has imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (163 BNSS) in the Jirania Sub-Division of West Tripura District until August 28, following violent incidents triggered by the vandalization of a Goddess Kali idol.
On the night of August 25, a group of miscreants attacked Durganagar village, damaging several houses, setting them on fire, and causing additional destruction. This incident followed the discovery of the damaged Kali idol in a local temple. The violence led to targeted attacks on minority community members, with around 10 to 12 houses and some livestock being harmed.
In response to the unrest, the Tripura government deployed a significant number of security forces to restore order. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, the local MLA, visited the affected area and assisted in controlling the situation.
West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar’s order, effective from 1:00 AM on August 26 to 1:00 AM on August 28, prohibits the assembly of five or more people in the Jirania Sub-Division. Exceptions are made for military, paramilitary, and police personnel, authorized public movements, government servants performing essential duties, and patients requiring urgent medical treatment.
The government has urged the public to comply with the restrictions to ensure peace and prevent further escalation of tensions.
