Tripura Government Mandates Location Sharing for Teachers, Boosting Accountability
Agartala: In a significant move aimed at enhancing accountability and transparency, the Tripura government has directed all government school teachers across the state to share their real-time locations upon reaching their respective schools. This new directive, effective since June, expands upon the existing e-attendance system, bringing an estimated 25,000 teachers in 4,912 schools under its purview.
The integration of location sharing with e-attendance marks a pivotal step in ensuring teachers’ punctuality and presence. “E-attendance with shared location has been introduced in all the government schools. Earlier, only the e-attendance system was implemented in schools. But one more feature – share location of teachers has been inserted from June,” explained Prasant Killikdar, Unakoti district’s education officer and joint director of the department. He further elaborated that teachers must activate the “share location” option only after entering school premises for the system to register their presence.
Once the teachers have shared their locations, the headmaster or headmistress of each school will upload the attendance data onto the school management system, a digital platform. This centralized system will then allow real-time access to teachers’ attendance and location information for top officials, ranging from the Chief Minister to the Secretary and Director of the department. While the system currently tracks arrival, the implementation for recording departure times is yet to be introduced. For students, attendance continues to be managed by class teachers.
To complement these digital initiatives, the education department has also formed two inter-district committees for each district. These committees are tasked with conducting regular surprise visits to schools. “The teams conduct surprise visits to schools on a regular interval and submit their reports to the district education offices for forwarding them to the Director for taking necessary steps to ensure quality education,” Killikdar stated. He emphasized that these comprehensive measures are designed to ensure transparency in teacher attendance and ultimately improve educational outcomes. As a testament to these ongoing efforts, he proudly noted the improved performance of the state government’s Vidyajyoti (CBSE) schools across Tripura this year compared to 2024.
