Tripura Government Plans Massive Tree Plantation Drive: Aims to Plant Five Lakh Saplings in a Day

Northeast Desk, 6th May: In a bid to enhance Tripura’s forest coverage and combat global warming, the state government has announced a ambitious plan to plant five lakh saplings in a single day. Forest Minister Animesh Debbaram revealed this initiative on Monday, highlighting the importance of reforestation amid scorching heatwaves sweeping across the state.

Tripura currently boasts a forest coverage of 66 percent, but the government aims to further bolster this figure through extensive tree plantation efforts. Minister Debbaram emphasized the crucial role of plantation drives in mitigating the effects of climate change.

The forest department has meticulously planned a phased approach to execute this ambitious endeavor. The targeted five lakh saplings will be planted in a single day during the first week of July, although the specific date remains undisclosed. Minister Debbaram underscored the importance of ensuring the survival of the newly planted saplings, emphasizing the need for nurturing and care to facilitate forest expansion.

Encouraging community participation, Minister Debbaram appealed to individuals, social organizations, and clubs to join hands with the forest department in this massive tree plantation drive. He acknowledged the necessity of balancing development with environmental conservation, noting that while trees may need to be cut for projects like national highway expansion, proactive afforestation efforts are essential to maintain ecological balance and biodiversity.
