Tripura Government to Reappoint Retired Police Officers for Immigration Centers
Northeast Desk, 19th June: The Tripura government has decided to reappoint 67 retired police officers on a contractual basis to manage proposed immigration centers at key locations including the Agartala airport and Integrated Checkposts (ICPs) in Nischintapur and Sabroom. This decision was confirmed by Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Tuesday, highlighting the necessity due to a shortage of CISF personnel at the MBB Airport, which is set to host international flights to Chittagong.
Nischintapur, a crucial entry point for the Agartala-Bangladesh rail link, and Sabroom ICP also require additional security personnel for handling immigration operations. The state cabinet has approved the proposal to reappoint retired police officers for these roles, with plans to formally establish the immigration center at MBB Airport pending approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Minister Chowdhury emphasized that once the immigration centers are operationalized, the retired officers will play a pivotal role under contract arrangements. The state government has already allocated Rs 15 crore as a gap fund to support SpiceJet’s initiative to launch flights between Agartala and Chittagong, with Rs 3.76 crore disbursed to the airline to date.
Additionally, the cabinet has greenlit the creation and filling of 469 positions across the health & family welfare and food & civil supplies departments. This includes the creation of 226 medical officer posts and recruitment of 16 super-specialist medical officers and 172 specialist medical officers to bolster healthcare services in Tripura.
