Tripura Human Rights Commission Initiates Inquiry into Alleged Custodial Death

Tripura: Following the death of Badal Tripura after his alleged torture in police custody, the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken a suo motu complaint of the incident. The Commission has directed Director General of Police Amitab Ranjan to conduct an immediate inquiry and submit an interim report within 15 days.

Background of the Incident

• Arrest and Death: Badal Tripura was arrested on October 13 in connection with a theft case involving rubber sheets. He died at his home on October 16, with reports indicating that his death was linked to torture inflicted during his time in police custody.
• Public Outcry: Following his death, tensions erupted as protesters gathered outside the police station in South Tripura, demanding justice for Badal.

Commission’s Response

• The Commission, led by Justice S. C. Das and including members B. K. Ray and U. Choudhuri, referenced news reports detailing the allegations of physical torture that led to Tripura’s death.
• They noted significant local resentment regarding the incident, highlighting the community’s belief that Badal succumbed to injuries from police torture.
• In response, five police personnel have been suspended, and a formal case has been registered.

• The Commission emphasized that the allegations indicate a violation of human rights, prompting them to take provisional cognizance of the matter.
• Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha has also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Badal Tripura’s death.
