Tripura Labour Minister Claims Reduction in Unemployment Amid Opposition Criticism
Northeast Desk, 6th September: Tripura’s Labour Minister Tinku Roy claimed that the government has recruited 20,000 individuals in various departments over the past three years, during a discussion on unemployment initiated by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman. The recruits have been hired across regular scale, contractual, and fixed-pay categories.
Minister Roy further stated that the government has already initiated the process to fill an additional 20,000 posts, aiming to further reduce the unemployment rate. He highlighted that the number of registered unemployed youth in the state dropped from 7,41,305 in March 2018 to 3,09,882 by March 2024.
In response, Roy Barman criticized the government for delaying recruitment, particularly for engineers, SLET, NET, and PhD-qualified youth. He raised concerns over the absence of replacements for the 5,000 annual retirees in the state. The Congress MLA also demanded the abolition of outsourcing and fixed-pay positions, stating that those employed under these categories are deprived of full benefits.
Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury also took aim at the ruling BJP, accusing it of failing to fulfill its 2018 election promise to fill 50,000 government vacancies, and urged the government to address the rising frustration among Tripura’s youth over the lack of employment opportunities.
