Tripura Landslide Claims Three Lives as Heavy Rainfall Continues to Wreak Havoc
Northeast Desk, August 21, 2024 – A tragic landslide triggered by continuous rainfall in Tripura’s Devipur ADC village claimed the lives of three family members on August 20. The victims, Trisankar Chakma, his wife Ranjani Chakma, and their 12-year-old daughter Mita Chakma, were trapped under the debris when the landslide struck their home. Another family member sustained injuries in the incident.
In response to the escalating situation, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha convened an urgent review meeting on Tuesday to assess the state’s flood conditions. The meeting focused on evaluating the ongoing heavy rainfall’s impact and implementing measures to ensure that relief efforts reach those affected promptly.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tripura for the next two days due to a low-pressure system over central Bangladesh. The IMD has also warned of potential flash floods, poor visibility, and further landslides in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have issued an advisory urging residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to exercise caution and avoid travel to waterlogged regions. Emergency services remain on high alert as the state braces for more adverse weather in the coming days.
