Tripura Launches Massive Plantation Drive Led by Chief Minister Manik Saha

Northeast Desk, 5th July: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on July 5 spearheaded a state-wide plantation drive, resulting in the planting of 500,000 saplings in just five minutes. The event, held near Taranagar on NH 108 B in West Tripura’s Mohanpur sub-division, was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek pedh maa ke naam” (One tree in mother’s name) campaign, which was launched on World Environment Day.

Joined by Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma and Agriculture and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Saha stressed the critical importance of environmental conservation and addressing climate change. “Ecological balance is crucial. The relationship between humans and trees is symbiotic. To counter global warming, trees play a vital role,” Saha remarked.

During the event, the chief minister distributed saplings to local residents, underscoring the government’s dedication to sustainable practices and a greener future. Forest Minister Debbarma shared plans for reforesting degraded lands, including areas impacted by national highway construction.

The forest department has set an ambitious goal to plant an additional 4 to 4.5 million trees by the end of the year. “We currently have 7.6 million seedlings and aim to grow 5 million of them into fully mature trees,” Debbarma stated.
