Tripura Launches Universal Health Insurance Scheme for 4.15 Lakh Families

Northeast Desk, 15th February: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha introduced a groundbreaking universal health insurance scheme aimed at providing coverage to 4.15 lakh families in the northeastern state. Under the Chief Minister’s Jan Arogya Yojana (CM-JAY), eligible families, including government employees not covered under PM-JAY, will receive insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh each.

Saha highlighted the necessity of such a scheme, noting the financial burden faced by individuals during medical emergencies. He underscored the constraints faced in providing direct financial assistance and expressed the need for an alternative solution. The CM-JAY aims to bridge this gap and ensure access to quality healthcare for those in need.

During a program in Amarpur, Gumati district, Saha emphasized the prevalence of health-related issues among people seeking assistance through the Mukhyamantri Samipeshu program. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving healthcare but acknowledged resource limitations.

The proposed health insurance scheme is expected to benefit over 4 lakh individuals in Tripura who are not covered under the Prime Minister’s Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Saha also highlighted efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure, with the North Eastern Council (NEC) allocating Rs 717 crore for this purpose. Specific allocations include funds for Tripura Dental College, a mother and child care block at GBP Hospital, and a drug de-addiction center in Sepahijala district’s Bishramganj.
