Tripura Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for 2019 Murder of Woman
Agartala: In a significant development, Tripura Police on Friday confirmed the conviction of 36-year-old Sanjoy Ghosh for the brutal murder of Kanchanbala Nath in 2019. The Sessions Judge of Dharmanagar, North Tripura, handed down the sentence after finding Ghosh guilty under Sections 302 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code.
According to the case details, Ghosh, a resident of Sanicharra under Churaibari Police Station, killed Kanchanbala Nath at her residence in East Hurua, Gowala Basti, in the Dharmanagar Police Station jurisdiction during the night of June 29–30, 2019.
The court sentenced Ghosh to life imprisonment and a fine of ₹10,000 under Section 302 (murder). Failure to pay the fine will lead to an additional six months of simple imprisonment. Under Section 380 (theft in dwelling house), he was further awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a ₹5,000 fine, with a default penalty of three more months of simple imprisonment.
Police credited the conviction to the meticulous investigation led by WSI Swarna Debbarma of Dharmanagar Women Police Station, who filed the charge sheet that secured the conviction.
Authorities have termed the verdict as a strong message against violent crimes, reaffirming the justice system’s commitment to protecting victims and upholding the rule of law.
