Tripura Minister Distributes Free Helmets Amid Rising Road Fatalities

Northeast Desk, 15th June: Tripura’s Transport Minister, Sushanta Chowdhury, took a proactive step on June 14 by distributing free helmets to the public, aiming to tackle the state’s alarming rate of road accidents. Chowdhury highlighted that Tripura records approximately 250 fatal road accidents annually, with many victims suffering severe head injuries due to the absence of helmets.

“Every year, nearly 250 fatal road accidents occur in the state, often resulting in devastating consequences for the victims and their families,” Chowdhury emphasized, underscoring the financial burden imposed by such incidents.

According to data from the transport department, Tripura witnesses an average of 700 to 750 two-wheeler accidents per year, with around 250 causing critical injuries or fatalities. In response to these concerning statistics, the transport department, in collaboration with traffic authorities, has launched campaigns to distribute helmets to motorcycle riders in urban areas.

Despite these initiatives, Chowdhury expressed dismay over the persistent disregard for safety measures among riders, which jeopardizes both their own lives and the safety of others on the road. He reiterated the pivotal role of helmets in reducing injuries and fatalities during accidents, urging the public to prioritize road safety at all times.
