Tripura Minister Faces Calls for Removal Over Racist Remarks
Agartala; The Tripura Rajya Upajati Ganamukti Parishad (GMP), the indigenous wing of the Left Front in Tripura, has demanded the removal of Minister Ratan Lal Nath from the state cabinet. This call to action follows racist remarks allegedly made by Nath against Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury during a discussion in the Tripura Legislative Assembly on March 24.
The controversy surrounds Chaudhury’s discussion of an alleged corruption case involving a minister’s family, during which Nath purportedly targeted him with caste-based remarks and threats. The GMP has strongly condemned Nath’s behaviour, deeming it a serious breach of democratic principles and constitutional values.
In a memorandum submitted to Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, the GMP emphasised that Nath, as the Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs, is expected to uphold democratic decorum, not undermine it. The organisation urged the governor to take strict action against Nath and remove him from the cabinet.
The GMP highlighted Chaudhury’s esteemed reputation as a leader of Adivasi communities in Tripura and nationally, stressing that his experience and dedication warrant respect. The organisation asserted that differences of opinion can be expressed through constitutional and civil mechanisms, rather than resorting to caste-ethnic abuses and threats.
