Tripura MP Urges Massive Railway Overhaul in Meeting with Union Minister
Agartala: New Delhi witnessed a significant push for infrastructural development as Tripura’s Member of Parliament, Biplab Kumar Deb, engaged with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, advocating for a comprehensive modernisation of the state’s railway network.
The discussions, held on Tuesday, centred on the urgent need for substantial upgrades to facilitate smoother and more efficient rail travel within Tripura and its connectivity to the rest of India.
The former Chief Minister of Tripura presented a detailed list of demands, encompassing the electrification and doubling of existing railway tracks, a move aimed at significantly boosting the network’s capacity and speed. Specific routes, including Lumding-Sabroom and Agartala-Sabroom, were highlighted for immediate attention. Beyond infrastructural enhancements, Deb also called for the introduction of new express trains, notably the Vande Bharat, extending its service up to Guwahati, and new express services linking Agartala with distant cities such as Jammu, Puri, and Gaya.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed the necessity of upgrading key railway stations across Tripura, including Agartala, Dharmanagar, Kumarghat, and Udaipur, under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, to world-class standards. The development of an industrial rail link and the improvement of the Jirania Yard were also key points of discussion, aimed at supporting the state’s industrial growth and logistical efficiency.
In response to Deb’s comprehensive proposal, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reportedly gave a positive assurance, promising to take appropriate action on a priority basis. This commitment signals a potential turning point for Tripura’s railway infrastructure, with the prospect of significant advancements in the near future.
