Tripura: NLFT Militant Serving Life Imprisonment Escapes from Central Jail
Northeast Desk, 14th May: A member of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), who was serving a life sentence for murder, has escaped from the central jail in Tripura’s Sepahijala district, according to an official statement on Tuesday.
The inmate, Swarna Kumar Tripura, was discovered missing during the morning roll call at the central jail, Sepahijala District Magistrate Nagesh Kumar reported. Tripura was convicted for a murder in South Tripura’s Santirbazar area and was serving a life sentence in the high-security facility.
District Magistrate Kumar said, “All police stations have been alerted, and a massive search operation is underway to apprehend the escaped convict.”
This is not the first escape attempt by Tripura; he previously fled from the central jail in 2016 and from Kanchanpur sub-jail in 2022.
Following the escape, Sepahijala Superintendent of Police Bogati J. Reddy visited the central jail to assess the situation. An inquiry has been launched to determine how the escape occurred, and CCTV footage is being reviewed for clues.
A senior police officer indicated that the escape likely took place during the early hours of Tuesday. The authorities are now intensifying efforts to locate and recapture the fugitive.
