Tripura Opposition Leader Criticizes BJP Government Over Employment and Tribal Council Elections
Agartala: Tripura opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury, addressing a massive rally organized by the Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP) at Circuit House in Agartala, lambasted the BJP-led coalition government for its alleged failure to address unemployment and fill vacant government posts.
Chaudhury accused the government of backtracking on its promises made during the 2018 election campaign. “The BJP had assured that its first cabinet meeting would approve a proposal to fill 50,000 vacant posts in the government sector. They also promised to generate 7 lakh jobs in five years. Instead, the number of government employees has reduced by 56,000 from March 2018 to March 2024,” he said.
He also criticized BJP lawmakers for accusing the opposition of inciting unemployed youth when the issue was raised in the Assembly. “When we moved a motion on employment, treasury bench members accused us of fomenting unrest among the youth. We demand the government take immediate steps to fill vacant posts and address the unemployment crisis,” Chaudhury added.
The opposition leader also strongly demanded that elections be held for the Village Committees in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which have been pending for four years. He criticized the government for citing various reasons to delay the elections, leading to a developmental standstill in tribal areas.
“During the Left Front regime, development continued in the village committee areas even amidst insurgency. Now, under the BJP-led government, progress has come to a halt in tribal council areas,” he said, calling for immediate action to restore governance and development.
Following the rally, a five-member GMP delegation led by state president Naresh Jamatia met Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu at Raj Bhavan to submit a six-point charter of demands.
The demands included:
- Immediate elections to the village committees under the TTAADC.
- Implementation of Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservations in government sector employment.
- Measures to address unemployment and fill vacant government posts.
The opposition rally and subsequent meeting with the governor underline growing discontent among sections of the population and political pressure on the ruling BJP to address employment and governance issues in Tripura.
