Tripura Panchayat Polls Likely to Take Place by First Week of August

Northeast Desk, 11th June: The Tripura State Election Commission is gearing up to conduct three-tier panchayat polls in the state by early August, as the current term is set to expire during that time.

In a briefing with journalists, Tripura State Election Commissioner Saradindu Chowdhury emphasized that the present Panchayat term is scheduled to conclude in the initial week of August.

Chowdhury stated, “The Tripura State Election Commission is diligently working towards ensuring the election takes place promptly, aiming for completion by the first week of August. To this end, we have finalized 2,650 polling stations across 35 blocks and have already released the draft voter list, with the period for claims and objections currently underway. The finalization of the voter list is anticipated by July 24, with a total of 12,95,086 voters listed according to the draft.”

He further elaborated that the upcoming election will encompass 6,370 seats in Gram Panchayats, 423 seats in Panchayat Samitis, and 116 seats in Zila Parishads.

“We are diligently working towards finalizing the voter list by July 24, after which we will engage in discussions with the state government to determine the election date. A proposal will be submitted by the State Election Commission (SEC) to conduct the election either in the last week of July or the first week of August,” Chowdhury added.
