Tripura: Platform Ganja Bust Foils Smuggling Bid at Agartala Station
Agartala: In a significant pre-emptive strike against narcotics trafficking, the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Agartala Railway Station successfully seized 9.5 kilograms of ganja yesterday, Thursday, during a routine security inspection.
The illicit consignment was discovered on Platform Number 1, near the Jirania end, just moments before the scheduled departure of the Kanchenjunga Express. Authorities located the contraband stashed in two unclaimed bags, meticulously packed into seven individual packets.
Following established legal protocols, the seized narcotics have been officially categorised as unclaimed property. An intensive investigation has been initiated by the GRP to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for this smuggling attempt. The street value of the confiscated ganja is estimated to be approximately ₹1.9 lakh, underscoring the potential profit motive behind such illicit activities. This incident highlights the ongoing vigilance of security forces at critical transit points across the region.
This latest seizure by the GRP coincides with a heightened offensive against narcotics operations throughout the Northeastern states, as law enforcement agencies step up their efforts to curb the drug trade. Just a day prior, on July 16, a joint operation by Assam Rifles and Tripura Police in the Kheyerpur area resulted in the interception of a truck carrying a staggering 3 lakh Yaba tablets. This substantial haul, with an estimated international market value of ₹30 crore, has since been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for comprehensive investigation.
Earlier in the week, on Monday, Assam Police in the South Salmara Mankachar district also made a considerable dent in the drug network, seizing 50,000 Yaba tablets valued at ₹10 crore. A suspected trafficker was apprehended in connection with this case, following a meticulously planned operation where officers, acting on a crucial tip-off, established a checkpoint along the HM Road in Sonapur. These consecutive successes underscore the coordinated and robust approach being adopted by various law enforcement bodies to dismantle drug trafficking syndicates operating in the Northeast.
