Tripura: Rail Police Nabs Smugglers, Seizes ₹9 Lakh Contraband in Agartala Bust
Agartala: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Agartala conducted two successful operations at Agartala Railway Station on Monday night, seizing contraband substances worth an estimated ₹9 lakh. The busts included a large consignment of illicit cough syrup and a substantial quantity of ganja, leading to one arrest.
The first incident unfolded during a routine security sweep on Platform Number 3, shortly after the Humsafar Express pulled in. GRP personnel discovered two unclaimed bags, and upon inspection, uncovered 270 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup. This controlled substance, falling under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, carries an estimated street value of around ₹1.35 lakh. Authorities confirmed that all due legal procedures were observed during the seizure, and an investigation has been initiated to trace the individuals involved in this smuggling attempt.
Later, in a meticulously coordinated joint operation with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the GRP apprehended a woman on charges of drug smuggling. The accused, identified as 29-year-old Aparna Debbarma, a resident of Karaimura in Sepahijala district, was nabbed from the station premises before she could board her train. Inside her trolley bag, officers found 21.490 kilograms of dry ganja, neatly packed into nine separate packets. Officials revealed that during preliminary questioning, Debbarma confessed to her intention of transporting the ganja to Delhi. She also admitted to having previously smuggled similar consignments on three prior occasions from different railway stations, marking this as her maiden attempt from Agartala. The seized ganja is estimated to fetch around ₹7.5 lakh in the Delhi market. A formal case has been registered against Debbarma under the NDPS Act at the Agartala GRP police station, and further investigations are underway.
