Tripura Sees Surge in Tourist Numbers Post-Insurgency Era, CM Saha Champions State’s Scenic Appeal

Agartala: In a significant push to bolster the state’s tourism sector, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has passionately called upon citizens and visitors alike to explore the diverse attractions of the region, emphasizing the newfound peace that has swept the state.

Speaking after inaugurating tourism infrastructure projects valued at Rs 67 crore in Chabimura, Gomati district, Saha highlighted Tripura’s rich tapestry of offerings, ranging from spiritual sites to captivating ecotourism and historical landmarks. He noted a marked increase in tourist footfall, attributing it to the prevailing tranquility that has replaced the once turbulent atmosphere.

The chief minister pointed out that the state, which had endured decades of violence stemming from insurgency, has now achieved a state of peace following the large-scale surrender of banned outfits such as the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF). This transformation has directly contributed to the surge in tourism, with visitor numbers rising from 5 lakh in the fiscal year 2023-24 to an impressive 7 lakh in 2024-25. This growth, he asserted, marks a significant leap for Tripura’s tourism sector. In a bid to enhance tourist safety and security, the government is also considering the introduction of a dedicated tourist police force, acknowledging the importance of safe travel for visitors.

Saha underscored the pivotal role tourism can play in uplifting the socio-economic conditions of rural communities, stating that the government is committed to implementing comprehensive measures to attract and accommodate tourists. Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury further elaborated on the government’s initiatives, revealing that the Rs 67 crore project in Gomati district, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), will include a modern cafeteria, boating facilities, pathways, and 16 cottages equipped with state-of-the-art amenities at Fatik Sagar and Amar Sagar.

Additionally, Chowdhury announced that the central government has sanctioned Rs 97.70 crore under the Swadesh Darshan scheme for the development of 51 Shakti Peeth at Bandower, also in Gomati district. Furthermore, another Rs 48 crore has been allocated to establish an eco-tourism spot at Sachindranagar in West Tripura district. Chowdhury expressed confidence that these projects, once completed, will significantly transform Tripura’s tourism landscape, offering a renewed and enriched experience for all who visit.
