Tripura Targets Irrigation Boost with Over 10,000 Solar-Powered Pumps under PM Kusum Scheme

Agartala: The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish over 10,000 solar-powered pump sets across the state to ensure assured irrigation for rural farmlands. The initiative, undertaken under the PM Kusum scheme, aims to significantly enhance agricultural productivity by providing farmers with a sustainable and cost-effective irrigation solution.

As of January 15, TREDA has successfully installed 3,616 solar-powered pumps, ensuring irrigation coverage for 7,232 acres of farmland. This has directly benefited 3,616 marginal farmers, many of whom have struggled with inconsistent access to water resources. According to TREDA Joint Director Debabrata Sukladas, efforts are in full swing to set up an additional 5,051 pumps, while 2,264 more are being prepared for installation to meet the target of 10,895 units. Once fully implemented, the scheme will provide irrigation facilities to approximately 21,790 acres of farmland.

Under the PM Kusum scheme, farmers can avail of solar pumps at heavily subsidized rates, making the program accessible even to small-scale agricultural workers. Sukladas highlighted that a 1-horsepower (HP) pump, priced at ₹1,39,000, is available to farmers for just ₹10,000. Similarly, a 2-HP pump costing ₹1,77,528 is offered at a reduced price of ₹15,000. These pumps are designed to operate for at least 25 years, eliminating electricity costs and reducing the financial burden on farmers.

TREDA is also providing support to farmers who lack water sources for irrigation, ensuring they can benefit from the scheme through additional subsidies. Sukladas emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative, noting that it is aligned with the state government’s goal of doubling farmers’ production by enhancing access to reliable irrigation.

The solar-powered pump program has generated widespread optimism in Tripura’s agricultural sector, with many viewing it as a crucial step toward sustainability and self-reliance. The state government’s proactive measures to expand irrigation infrastructure underscore its commitment to fostering rural development and improving livelihoods for marginal farmers.
