Tripura: Tipra Indigenous Students Federation Calls for Indefinite Road and Rail Blockade

Northeast Desk, 9th February: The Tipra Indigenous Students Federation (TISF), affiliated with Tripura’s principal opposition party Tipra Motha, has announced an indefinite road and rail blockade starting from February 12. The blockade is in protest against the Tripura Board of Secondary Education’s decision to restrict the use of the Roman script for writing the Kokborok subject in board exams.

During a press conference, TISF President Sajra Debbarma highlighted that initially, Dr. Dhananjay Gan Chowdhury, the President of TBSE, allowed students to write the Kokborok subject exam in either Roman or Bengali script. However, he later reversed this decision and mandated the use of only Bengali script.

Debbarma expressed dissatisfaction, stating, “The TBSE President assured us of allowing either Roman or Bengali script for exams. Historical evidence shows the usage of both scripts in the past. In protest, we will block roads and railways indefinitely starting February 12. We demand written confirmation from the education department regarding the acceptance of the Roman script.”

He further accused the state government of violating the education system established by the central government. “We firmly advocate for the use of the Roman script in the exam. All highways and railways will be blocked from February 12, except for emergency vehicles,” he added.
