Tripura to Integrate Drone Technology in Agriculture Sector, Focus on Women Empowerment
Northeast Desk, 28th June: Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, announced on June 27 that the state will soon integrate drone technology into its agriculture sector to address various challenges. The initiative aims to empower women, particularly members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), by providing them with training to effectively operate drones for tasks such as spraying fertilizers and pesticides in fruit and flower gardens.
Speaking to reporters at the inauguration of the new Agriculture Development Research and Training Centre in Killa, Gomati district, Nath highlighted the central government’s scheme called “Drone Didi,” specifically designed for women. He mentioned that a state committee was promptly formed following the launch of the scheme, and based on its recommendations, drones will be deployed to each of Tripura’s 47 agriculture sub-divisions within the next two months.
Nath further elaborated on a special initiative to appoint “Krishi Sakhis” (Friends of Farmers) who will deliver agriculture-related solutions to rural farmers. Under this scheme, one Sakhi will be appointed for each rural local body, such as Gram Panchayats and Village Committees. The proposal has been forwarded to the central government for approval, and if sanctioned, the process of appointing Sakhis will commence promptly.
The minister emphasized that these initiatives are part of Tripura’s comprehensive efforts to modernize its agriculture sector, enhance productivity, and empower rural women through innovative technologies and support schemes.
This story encapsulates Tripura’s strategic plans to leverage drone technology and empower women in agriculture, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance agricultural practices and rural livelihoods.
