Northeast Desk,15th December: In a significant operational achievement, the Tripura Police successfully apprehended two high-ranking leaders of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) (Biswamohan) on the night of December 14, 2023. The captured individuals are Sachin Debbarma, former Army Chief, and Utpal Debbarma, also known as Omthai, former Secretary General of NLFT (BM). The arrest took place in Simna, a tribal-majority village situated near the Indo-Bangla international border in West Tripura.
Both leaders, who held prominent military and political roles within the banned insurgent group, were intercepted immediately after illegally crossing into Indian territory through the Simna area. The duo had been in hiding since their arrest in Bangladesh approximately five years ago. Acting on recent intelligence, the police executed the operation, detaining Sachin from the Sidhai area and Omthai from Champahower in the Khowai district around 7:30 pm.
This successful operation marks another milestone for the Tripura Police, as they have now apprehended or facilitated the surrender of more than 24 NLFT (BM) leaders and members in the past year and a half. Officials attribute this accomplishment to enhanced anti-insurgency operations, driven by intelligence and inter-agency coordination. Despite the progress made, the police emphasize their ongoing efforts to eradicate such insurgent groups, underscoring their commitment to maintaining security and stability in the region.
