Tripura: Transgender Community Steps Up to Aid Flood Victims in Agartala
Northeast, August 24 — In a commendable display of solidarity, members of the transgender community in Agartala have mobilized to provide relief to flood-stricken residents across the city. On Saturday, they distributed essential supplies to those displaced by the severe flooding that has beset Tripura since August 19.
The state has been grappling with catastrophic floods caused by relentless rainfall, which has forced over 100,000 people into more than 400 relief camps. The disaster has resulted in 24 fatalities, with districts like Gomati and South Tripura still in a state of emergency despite receding floodwaters.
Amidst this crisis, the transgender community has taken a proactive stance in aiding affected families. Spearheaded by Bandhana, a leading figure in the community, their relief efforts have seen the distribution of rice, lentils, potatoes, onions, salt, and other crucial supplies to various relief camps.
Bandhana shared their motivation with reporters, highlighting a strong sense of duty and gratitude towards society. “The severe floods have impacted many lives in Agartala and beyond, forcing people into relief camps. Our community has always been supported and respected by society, and it’s now our turn to give back,” she said.
Bandhana also acknowledged the guidance of their spiritual leader, Guru Maa Mala Masi, who, though currently in Kolkata, has been instrumental in directing their efforts. “Guru Maa immediately instructed us to assist the flood victims. We have gathered resources from within the community and are dedicated to helping those in need. Both the Tripura and Central Governments have recognized our efforts, and we aim to contribute positively during this crisis,” Bandhana added.
The community’s relief operations are focusing on visiting 10 to 12 camps throughout the day to ensure that essential items are delivered effectively. “In these challenging times, it’s crucial that we support those who have supported us. Our efforts are a testament to our commitment to stand by our fellow citizens during their time of need,” Bandhana concluded, as the transgender community continues its vital relief work.
