Tripura: Wild Elephant Rampages Wedding Ceremony
Northeast Desk, 4th March: A wild elephant went on a rampage in Tripura’s Khowai district on Monday, causing chaos and destruction. The incident occurred in the Madhya Krishnapur area during the early hours of the morning.
The elephant first targeted a house where a wedding ceremony was underway, vandalizing the wedding decorations and damaging a nearby tractor. It then proceeded to attack the cowshed at the house, resulting in the collapse of the structure.
Santosh Bhwomik, the owner of the house, expressed distress over the incident, stating that one of the cows in the cowshed, which was pregnant, died on the spot, while another sustained multiple injuries. The disruption caused by the elephant’s rampage forced the guests to flee for their safety.
In response to the incident, angry villagers blocked the Teliamura-Krishnapur Road to protest. Subsequently, a Forest Department team visited the village to address the concerns of the residents.
Assuring assistance, Sub-Divisional Forest Officer (SDFO) of Teliamura, Gaurav R Wagh, stated that the victim’s house would be decorated before the wedding resumed, and compensation would be provided within a week. Additionally, the Forest Department pledged to expedite the process of radio collaring all wild elephants in the Mungiakmai range within two months to prevent such incidents in the future.
Efforts are underway to seek permission from the Centre to implement these measures effectively.
