Tripura’s AGMC to Launch Organ Transplant Unit in Partnership with Mohan Foundation

Agartala: Northeast India’s healthcare sector is poised for a major transformation as Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) prepares to launch its organ transplant unit, beginning with liver transplants.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Chennai-based Mohan Foundation, marks a significant leap forward in Tripura’s medical capabilities.

The development follows the success of two kidney transplants performed at AGMC in 2024 and is set to expand the region’s transplant infrastructure.

A specialised team from the Mohan Foundation has arrived in Agartala to train medical professionals and educate the public about organ donation and transplantation procedures.

Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of AGMC and GB Pant Hospital, emphasised that the collaboration would strengthen the organ donation framework across Tripura.

He cited statistics from the hospital’s trauma centre, which recorded 98 and 111 deaths in 2023 and 2024, respectively—many of which could have resulted in viable organ donations.

The initiative gained momentum after a recent workshop attended by Chief Minister Manik Saha, who stressed the need for public participation in making the programme a success.

AIIMS New Delhi professor Dr. Deepak Gupta underscored the importance of forming a dedicated brain death committee to oversee organ donation certification.

Mohan Foundation’s Executive Director, Pallavi Kumar, identified three critical factors for the programme’s success: infrastructure development, personnel training, and family counselling.

Local organisations, including Lions Club and Rotary Club, will assist in spreading awareness about the importance of organ donation.

By establishing an organ transplant unit, AGMC aims to address the acute shortage of such facilities in Northeast India, offering life-saving procedures at reduced costs and minimising the need for patients to seek treatment in distant metropolitan cities.
