Trump, Putin Hold ‘Productive’ Talks in Alaska but No Breakthrough on Ukraine

International: U.S. President Donald Trump described his high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage as “productive,” signaling cautious progress in efforts to address the devastating toll of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Speaking alongside Putin at a joint press conference, Trump said the talks were centered on ways to drastically reduce the number of lives lost each week in the conflict, a goal he claimed both leaders share.

“We’re going to stop 5,000, 6,000, 7,000 people a week from being killed, and President Putin wants to see that as much as I do,” Trump told reporters. He suggested that cooperation between Moscow and Kyiv could immediately ease human suffering, though he stopped short of announcing any concrete deal.

According to Trump, the discussions covered a wide range of issues and produced agreement on several fronts, but key differences remain. “There were many, many points that we agreed on. But there are still a couple of big ones where we haven’t quite got there. We’ve made some headway, but there’s no deal until we have a deal,” he said, underscoring the fragile nature of the dialogue.

The U.S. president added that he would soon brief NATO allies, European leaders, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the outcomes of the summit, stressing the importance of collective alignment before moving forward. He also praised officials on both sides who contributed to the negotiations, describing their work as “a really great job” in advancing the talks.

While the Anchorage meeting marked a rare face-to-face encounter between the two leaders and was hailed as constructive, it concluded without a breakthrough. The path toward a concrete resolution of the war remains uncertain, with both Washington and Moscow leaving the door open for further engagement.
