Turkey & Syria Earthquake Claims Over 3,500 Lives So Far

Guwahati: The horrific 7.8 magnitude earthquake that jolted Turkey and Syria has claimed over 3,800 people’s lives so far.

There have been 15,914 injuries reported in Syria and Turkey combined following the earthquakes.

Earthquakes that shook Turkey’s southern region on Monday left at least 2,379 people dead and 14,483 others injured, according to the Anadolu Agency.

According to the Syrian Ministry of Health, 711 people have died and 1431 have been injured as a result of the earthquake in Syria, particularly in Lattakia, Aleppo, Hama and Tartus.

According to the Anadolu Agency, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Monday that was centred in the Pazarcik district shook Kahramanmaras and many provinces, including Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay and Kilis.

Later that day, the area was shaken by an earthquake with a 7.6 magnitude that was centred in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras. The earthquake was also felt in addition to other bordering nations, such as Lebanon and Syria.

The vice president of Turkey Fuat Oktay reported that 7,840 people had been pulled from the wreckage while 11,022 search and rescue teams were at the scene. According to him, 338,000 earthquake victims were housed in dorms, schools and shelters.

After earthquakes struck many southern countries, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that Turkey will observe seven days of national mourning.

Meanwhile, Syria’s Deputy Minister of Health Ahmed Damiriya said that four truckloads of medicines and surgical and emergency supplies were sent to Aleppo, Lattakia, and Hama in addition to sending medical convoys, 28 ambulances, and seven mobile clinics to Aleppo and Lattakia, as per the SANA report.

Syria has requested United Nations member states, the General Secretariat of the Organization, its agencies and funds, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and international organizations to help and support the efforts made by the Syrian government in facing the repercussions of the devastating earthquake.
