Twelve Political Leaders Join Manipur Congress Party, Strengthening its Position Ahead of 2024 Elections

Imphal: On November 8, twelve prominent leaders from different political backgrounds joined the Manipur Congress Party, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

The leaders included two former Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), four former chairpersons of the Autonomous District Council (ADC) Tamenglong, and six influential social workers.

The new members were formally welcomed into the party by Okram Ibobi Singh, former Chief Minister of Manipur, at the Congress Bhavan in Imphal. Among those who joined were former MLAs Kh Loken Singh and Z Kikhonbou Newmai, who have previously held significant political positions in the state.

In a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary for Communications, highlighted the growing influence of the Congress party in the region, stating, “The politics of Manipur is changing. @INCIndia won both the Lok Sabha seats in the state in June 2024, and now the exodus into the Congress continues. This is perhaps one reason why the non-biological PM is refusing to visit Manipur.”

The leaders who joined the Congress are:
1. Dr. Kh. Loken Singh, Ex-MLA from Sagolband A/C, Former Senior Vice-President of JDU
2. Z. Kikhonbou Newmai, Ex-MLA from Tamei A/C, Former Vice-Chairman of HAC, National Secretary of NPP
3. Humaliabou, Former Chairman, ADC Tamenglong
4. Ramwangdin Abonmai, Former Member, ADC Tamenglong
5. MP. Guang, Former Member, ADC Tamenglong
6. Tadinang Gangmei, Former Member, ADC Tamenglong
7. Lavner Chawang, Social Worker
8. Adam Thiumai, Social Worker
9. Manassen Ohawang, Social Worker
10. Achapbou Newmal, Social Worker
11. John Charenamai, Social Worker

The influx of political figures into Congress strengthens the party’s influence in Manipur, particularly as the state heads toward the 2024 elections.
