Guwahati: In a significant political twist, two Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) MLAs unexpectedly pledged their support to Conrad Sangma’s NPP on March 3 preventing the non-NPP-BJP combination from forming the government.
According to reports, the United Democratic Party (UDP) meeting to form a non-NPP-BJP government did not include the two HSPDP MLAs Shakliar Warjri (Mawthadraishan) and Methodius Dkhar (Mawshynrut). However, it was later learned that the two MLAs gave letters of support to NPP leader Conrad K Sangma.
KP Pangniang, President of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) responded to the support provided by the two HSPDP MLAs by writing a letter to NPP President Conrad Sangma withdrawing support for the NPP party in creating the government.
In his letter, Pangniang said, “The HSPDP did not authorize the two MLAs to lend support to the formation of your government as we have seen through media report. The party has no role in this affair and therefore withdraws our support to your party”.
It should be noted that the letter of support has been signed by 32 MLAs from the NPP, BJP, HSPDP, and two Independents which was delivered to the state governor, Phagu Chauhan, by NPP leader Conrad K. Sangma on Friday evening.
Conrad Sangma will be sworn-in for his second term as Chief Minister of Meghalaya on Tuesday. According to reports the ceremony will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
