Two Arrested in Barak

Guwahati: Two people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in Silchar controversies between Bengali versus Assamese Banner.

The accused had claimed to be members of the All-Bengali Students Youth Organisation (ABSYO) and was identified as Raju Deb and Samar Das.

According to reports, they were allegedly involved in defacing government hoardings in the Assamese language.

Massive reactions poured in after multiple hoardings of “Jal Jeevan Mission” were smeared with ‘black ink’, allegedly by the members of Barak Democratic Youth Front (BDYF) and ABSYO in Silchar.

Pradip Dutta Roy, a local leader and the founder of BDYF, was quizzed by the Cachar police for two hours on 19 October.

It may be mentioned that Bengali is the official language of Barak valley and without prejudice, the government is supposed to publish all official documents and advertisements in Bengali along with other languages.

An FIR has also been lodged against the chairman of Jal Jeevan Abhiyan for violating the act and publishing the advertisement in the Assamese language only.
