Guwahati, 24th March: In a startling revelation today, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that two students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have been detained over suspected ties to the terrorist group ISIS. According to CM Sarma, one student has already been apprehended, while Assam police are in the process of detaining the second student today.
Expressing grave concern over the matter, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that both detained students have allegedly been radicalized and are believed to have links with ISIS. These students reportedly hail from Batla House in Delhi.
The latest development comes in the wake of heightened vigilance following the arrest of ISIS India head Haris Farooqi in Dhubri district. Farooqi was apprehended after allegedly crossing over from Bangladesh.
The first student, Tauseef Ali Farooqui, a final-year Biotechnology student at IIT Guwahati, was taken into custody by Assam Police on March 23 after allegedly joining ISIS. This arrest was confirmed by Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh.
The second detainee, a fourth-year Biotechnology student, had recently made alarming statements on social media platforms and through emails indicating his intention to join ISIS. His disappearance from the IIT-Guwahati campus raised immediate concerns, leading to a widespread search operation.
According to police sources, the second student, originally from Delhi, was located in Hajo, approximately 30 km from Guwahati, and was promptly detained for interrogation.
Chief Minister Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and pledged full cooperation with central agencies to address the threat posed by radicalization.
