Two Miners From Meghalaya Die of Suspected Gas Poisoning in Assam’s Tinsukia
Northeast Desk, 4th July: Meghalaya Police reported a devastating incident as two coal miners from the state succumbed to gas poisoning in an illegal rat-hole mine located in Assam’s Tinsukia district. The tragic deaths occurred on July 1, highlighting the dangers associated with unauthorized mining practices.
Authorities have confirmed that the mine where the fatalities occurred was operating illegally, prompting an investigation into the circumstances leading to the gas poisoning. The police have requested a detailed report from Assam regarding the incident.
In a separate environmental concern, reports have surfaced regarding illegal sand mining activities at Misa Juri in Kaliabor. This serene area along the banks of Misa Juri, adjacent to the southeastern boundary of Shakamutia tea estate, has become a focal point for unauthorized sand extraction. Despite stringent regulations prohibiting such activities, local residents and environmental activists have expressed alarm over the unchecked exploitation of natural resources.
The rampant sand mining at Misa Juri has raised significant concerns about environmental degradation, posing a threat to the area’s scenic beauty and delicate ecosystem. Environmentalists are calling for stricter enforcement measures to curb these illicit practices and safeguard the region’s ecological balance.
