Two More Deaths Reported from Japanese Encephalitis in Assam
Guwahati, 4th August: Assam witnessed two more fatalities on Thursday from Japanese Encephalitis (JE), a vector-borne illness.
One of the victims was a teenage girl named Susmita Basumatary, who fought the disease for several days before succumbing to it. She was a resident of Chirang’s Basugaon.
Another incident involved Mukut Bhuyan, a social activist, who passed tragically while receiving medical care at a private hospital in Nagaon.
These recent deaths bring the total death toll related to Japanese Encephalitis to three in Assam for the month of July. Earlier, on August 1, an 11-year-old boy from Rupohihat in Assam also died of JE while undergoing treatment at a Nagaon private hospital. He was identified as Taibur Islam.
A viral brain infection called Japanese Encephalitis is spread by mosquito bites. The virus naturally resides in pigs and birds, and mosquitoes become carriers after biting infected animals.
