Two ULFA-I Cadres Surrender in Arunachal Pradesh, Adding to List of Militant Surrenders

Guwahati, 22nd July: Reports emerged on Saturday, revealing that two cadres of the banned militant group United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA-I) surrendered in Laju, Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district. The surrenders, identified as Rituraj Gohain alias Moina Asom and Mantha Neog, turned themselves in before the 6th Assam Rifles.

At present, both cadres are in the custody of the Assam Rifles, as the authorities assess the situation and conduct necessary investigations.

Following a crucial surrender in February of this year, when self-styled major Bulbul Chandra Barua alias Sangram Saikia turned himself in to Hiren Nath, the Additional Director General of Police at the time, this new development comes after that. Saikia, who has been around since 1997, received instruction in the use of weapons and medical facilities at ULFA camps in Myanmar. He developed become a close friend of ULFA-I Chief Paresh Barua and other top commanders over time, rising to the position of “major” within the group in 2018.

The series of surrenders signals a potential shift in the dynamics of militancy in the region, prompting authorities to reevaluate their approach in tackling such extremist groups. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact the overall security landscape in the region.
