UK Delegation Eyes Arunachal’s WWII Sites for Global Standards

Itanagar: A delegation from the UK-based Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) conducted a preliminary inspection of significant World War II historical sites in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Thursday. The visit marks a crucial step towards potentially elevating these war remnants to Commonwealth standards, an official statement revealed.

Led by Amit Bansal, CWGC’s regional head for the Indian subcontinent, the team meticulously surveyed several key locations. Their itinerary included the WWII cemetery, Laal Pool, Hamilton Bridge, and Hell Gate. The delegation also traversed the historic stretch of the Old Stilwell Road, which leads up to the iconic Pangsau Pass, gaining insights into the strategic importance of the area during the war.

The reconnaissance mission was specifically designed to assess the present condition of these monumental sites. The CWGC aims to identify areas where upgrades and necessary interventions are required to bring them in line with international Commonwealth standards for war graves and memorials.

Nampong MLA Laisam Simai affirmed the Arunachal Pradesh state government’s unwavering commitment to this initiative. He assured the CWGC of full support in their endeavour to upgrade the cemetery and other associated assets, highlighting the local administration’s dedication to preserving this vital piece of history.
